Abbott House

Oundle, Northamptonshire

A 40-beds care home, based on a highly-legible, ‘served’ and ‘servant’ organisation of our client’s brief. The residential accommodation is wrapped around a courtyard garden and is arranged in four clusters of 10-bedrooms per cluster, to offer a more domestic-scale of living to residents. Service and ancillary accommodation is located on the opposite side of a top-lit circulation spine, or ‘arcade’. The latter facilitates natural ventilation of what is a deep-plan building and doubles up as a wandering space for active residents. It is an especially useful facility for residents with dementia; and also acts as an all-important meeting place for relatives and other visitors to the home.  The detailed layout follows a public-to-private hierarchy of spaces that we have developed across many of our recent care homes, to avoid the all-too-common need for visitors to walk through private areas (e.g. bedrooms and bathrooms corridors) to reach semi-public areas (lounges and dining areas). The compactness of our design allowed our client to build this new home whilst the existing home remained operational.
