Pentan Architects provides an attentive and professional service across a range of small, medium and large projects, including new-build, regeneration and conservation projects. Our portfolio includes domestic housing, care homes for the elderly, extra-care housing, supported living developments, and community and public projects (such as GPs surgeries, health centres and a public library). In all that we do, we are focused on creating good quality, well-designed, efficient buildings that meet our clients’ needs and enhance the built environment.
Pentan Architects bring a careful and considered approach to each and every project. We strongly believe the success of a project is driven by listening carefully to and fully understanding our client’s requirements. To this, we then bring our extensive experience, allowing us to work together to develop solutions that are thoughtful, contextual, innovative and offer flexibility for the future, accepting that as time moves on, our clients’ needs can change. We fully appreciate we are only as good as our last project, and as such strive to learn from each project, taking this experience onwards to the next.
Who we are
Pentan Architects has expanded steadily over the last 20 years to a practice of over twenty five architectural and support staff. Our services include architectural design, master planning, project management, public consultation and interior design and we are able to offer, in-house, services such as SAP calculations, EPC certificates and CDM-C. We also have a certified Passivhaus Designer.
Pentan Architects (or Pentan Partnership) was founded in 1979 as the in-house design practice of a Cardiff-based housing association. With its four founding directors, Stephen Thwaites, Jim Dale, Andrew Hole and John Carter at the helm, the practice began trading independently in 1995. From its roots in the housing association movement, Pentan Architects has retained and built on its core-values and socially-conscious motivations, mainly on the basis of repeat commissions and recommendations.
In addition to the original four founding Directors, there are now seven Associate Directors who are playing an increasingly active role in the day-to-day running of the business. Pentan Architects recognise that, it is through the nurturing and mentoring of this ‘next generation’ its success in the future will be secured.
Pentan Architects operates a structure in which all staff can contribute according to their abilities and expertise. When a new project comes into the office it is allocated to one of the Directors (dependent upon their particular area of expertise), who take an active role through the duration of the project. A project team is then established consisting of at least one Associate Director and Architects and/or Technologists carefully selected to ensure we have the right blend of skills to fulfil our clients’ requirements. This approach inspires confidence that each and every design is the product of rigorous thought, based on Pentan’s considerable experience.
In our opinion, it is critical that that knowledge is disseminated and experiences shared throughout the practice. This is encouraged by inter-group working and regular design reviews at key points during a project. We feel that it is important to create an atmosphere in which staff feel they that are able to present and discuss their ideas freely and openly with their peers.
