An un-realised project, the accommodation within this specialist dementia care home is organised around a central atrium, to maximise the use of its compact site, and thereby meet our client’s brief for a 50-60 beds development. The atrium also generates a meaningful wandering space for its residents. Its evolution involved environmental studies which sought to balance natural day-lighting with the avoidance of glare; solar gain with the avoidance of over-heating; and the use of natural ventilation in a very deep-plan building.
