Chapel to Library

Bargoed, South Wales

Several of our Housing Association clients are involved in community regeneration projects; and this is one of them. Won in a limited competition, this project involves the re-use of an existing grade 2* Listed Baptist Chapel, to provide a new library, council ‘customer first’ centre and worship space. Our design protects the purity and integrity of the original chapel volume, through a selective demolition of the old ‘back’ and the construction of a new “second front'. The latter houses all of the necessary ‘servant’ spaces and provides disabled access to all of the new facilities.

Shortly after the new library opened, Welsh Government AM, Huw Lewis, sang its praises as follows: "Only  last week I visited the truly remarkable Hanbury Road chapel conversion in Bargoed, which is a traditional Welsh chapel that has been through a stunning, imaginative and very cost-effective conversion into one of the best library spaces that exists, to my mind, anywhere in the UK".
