This block of existing apartments was purchased and refurbished some 25 years ago by our Housing Association client. Standards that were acceptable 25 years ago are now no longer acceptable; and so our client set us the challenge of up-grading the accommodation and the thermal performance of the block without changing its external appearance. (It is located in one of Newport's Conservation Areas.) Rising to this challenge we redesigned the apartments to comply with current Welsh Assembly design quality standards (space standards and specification), increased their energy rating to Energy Efficiency rating B and substantially up-graded the acoustic insulation between apartments. This was the first refurbishement project in Wales to achieve these improvement standards, including the passing of an air pressure test, and one of the first to be procured under Partnering Contract JCT CE.
